Why not more Republicans for Obama?
March 11th, 2008 by showwoffIt’s starting to make news in this election year; the phenomenon of Republicans that support Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
Many news sources report on this as some sort of strange phenomenon. The question I have been asking myself in all of this is; why are there not alot more republicans for Obama?
You see, the Republicans have been taking a big chunk of their electorate for granted for a long time. It’s very similar to how the Democrats take the black vote for granted. For the republicans it’s their rural and small town voters that are being bamboozled into thinking that the Republican party represents them the best. This is simply not true. The republican party today and their policies actually benefit rich urban and suburban republicans in the business sector more than anybody. The type of republicans that couldn’t be more different from those located in small rural towns and farming communities.
The way Bush and his cabinet have ran this administration have definately helped big corporations like Wal-Mart; the type of place that some stereotypical right wingers love, even though it put alot of them and their own relatives out of business. Why is this? The answer can be summed up in one word: Stereotypes! That’s right I said it!, what a lot of you are thinking. The thing is, it used to be minorities were the victims of the majority of stereotyping. Times have changed. Now a huge chunk of white folks actually embrace some of these stereotypes about them. You see they love the whole the ‘Redneck’ culture that they can’t seem to se that others are laughing at.
It did not used to be this way. Yeah sure the small towns and country areas have no doubt always contained more redknecks than the ‘burbs or the innercity. But the thing is outside of the south they were always a minority among white small town types in places like Wisconsin, or Colorado or Oregon.
But that was then. Back then the small towns had more businesses open on mains street and alot more self employed and small business types. There were a lot more men who owned their own shoe repair shops and butcher shops, and clothing stores and restaurants, men who didn’t give a damn about bs like Larry the Cable Guy. There used to be women in these towns who were more concerned with raising their children to be polite and productive versus women who now like to be the ones to show their son how to shoot a gun.
You see since Reagan took over, the small town and small business culture has slowly gone down hill with more big corporations and chains taking over in places that used to be filled with businesses owned by their own residents. The Bush’s have continued this at every turn they get. But white small town types keep supporting republicans because that is what their parents and those around them told them too, because of past racial mistrust that sent most blacks to the democratic side and whites to the republican side.
But folks, we live in a new generation, one in where just like alot of minorities are wondering why they support Clinton style democrats who favor social issue that they do not. Alot of whites should start wondering why they support the right wing so much when their policies don’t benefit them as much, now that many whites could care less about keeping an all white power structure in place, and should start supporting the party that is going to bring us out of a recession again. That is the Democratic party led by Barack Obama.
